作家コメント
道を挟んだ隣人とは全く関わりがなく、どの様な人が住んでいるのか、私は知らない。隣人は、家と柵の間に、庭木を植えている。柵は中がほとんど見えないような隙間の少ないもので、私はその庭木がなんの木なのかわからないが、暖かい季節になると、その隙間から庭木の葉が少し手を出す。私は少し嬉しくなって、通るたびにそれに触れる。するとほら、見知らぬ家のペットと目配せをする時のような背徳感。柵というのは、なんだか変な気持ちにさせるものだ。
 
ディレクターコメント
市川は主に人間の周囲で暮らす生き物の慎ましい生活を描いている。作品の中で、生き物たちは妙な状況に置かれ、やや苦労している風に見え、それらは私達が知っている状況であったりする。作品の多くには社会問題などの要素も含まれるが、市川の作品において特徴的なのは、それらを糾弾をもって提示していないことだ。苦労する彼らを見つめる時、私達は価値観も言語も感覚も異なるその存在の視点にただ寄り添い、生まれた感情を諒解し、見守ることしかできない。だが、おそらくそれで良いのだろう。

Artist Comment
I have absolutely no connection with my neighbor across the street, and I couldn’t tell you what kind of person lives there. They’ve planted some trees between their house and the fence. The fence is so tightly built that it’s nearly impossible to see through, so I have no idea what kind of trees these are. However, as the warm season comes, I notice the leaves stretching out a little through the gaps. Every time I pass by, I feel a strange urge to touch them, almost like sharing a secret with a stranger’s pet. Fences really do have a way of making things feel a bit odd, don’t they?
 
Gallery Commentary
Ichikawa primarily depicts the modest lives of creatures living around humans. In her works, the creatures and animals appear to be in strange and somewhat difficult situations, which are sometimes situations we are familiar with. Many of the works include elements of social problems, but Ichikawa does not present them with condemnation. That is one of the elements that characterize her work. We cannot communicate clearly with the animals and creatures depicted in her works because they have different values, languages, and worlds. When we look at them as they struggle without words, we can only be attuned to their point of view, acknowledge the emotions that have arisen within us, and watch over them. But that is all right.
