作家コメント
日が落ちた帰り道、街灯の少ない道を歩いていると、ごみ捨て場に目がとまった。私は夜になるとあまり目が見えなくなるから、グッと眉間に力を入れて目を凝らす。それは白っぽい長いもので、私はビクッと飛び上がった。ヘビだ！ヘビは怖いが、美しい。ちゃんと近くで見たいと思って、ゆっくり近づくと、今度は笑いが溢れた。それはゴミを守るネットについたロープだった。少し残念な気持ち。本物の野生のヘビを見たのは、何年も前だ。ヘビがこの土地にまだ住んでいたとしたら、蛇も仲間を見つけた喜びに舞い上がり、そして落胆するだろうか。
 
ディレクターコメント
市川は主に人間の周囲で暮らす生き物の慎ましい生活を描いている。作品の中で、生き物たちは妙な状況に置かれ、やや苦労している風に見え、それらは私達が知っている状況であったりする。作品の多くには社会問題などの要素も含まれるが、市川の作品において特徴的なのは、それらを糾弾をもって提示していないことだ。苦労する彼らを見つめる時、私達は価値観も言語も感覚も異なるその存在の視点にただ寄り添い、生まれた感情を諒解し、見守ることしかできない。だが、おそらくそれで良いのだろう。

Artist Comment
On my way home after sunset, I was walking along a dimly lit street when something at the garbage disposal area caught my eye. Since my eyesight isn’t very good at night, I squinted and focused intently. It was something long and pale, and I jumped in surprise. A snake! Snakes scare me, but they’re beautiful. I wanted a closer look, so I slowly approached it, only to find myself laughing. It was just a rope attached to the net protecting the garbage. I felt a bit disappointed. It’s been years since I last saw a real wild snake. If there were still snakes living around here, I wonder—would a snake, too, feel a moment of thrill at finding a fellow creature, only to feel a hint of disappointment?
 
Gallery Commentary
Ichikawa primarily depicts the modest lives of creatures living around humans. In her works, the creatures and animals appear to be in strange and somewhat difficult situations, which are sometimes situations we are familiar with. Many of the works include elements of social problems, but Ichikawa does not present them with condemnation. That is one of the elements that characterize her work. We cannot communicate clearly with the animals and creatures depicted in her works because they have different values, languages, and worlds. When we look at them as they struggle without words, we can only be attuned to their point of view, acknowledge the emotions that have arisen within us, and watch over them. But that is all right.
