作家コメント
散歩をしていると、つがいの蝶が目に入った。求愛ダンスをしている。彼らはあの瞬間のために、葉を黙々と食べ、一度体を溶かしてまで美しい姿に変身し、ついにあのダンスを踊るに至った。あの短い一生の中で子孫を残す相手をダンスで選ぶ彼らの決断力に脱帽してしまうが、もしや、疑念を持ちながらも、求愛ダンスは一度始めたらやめられないのだろうか。
ディレクターコメント
市川は主に人間の周囲で暮らす生き物の慎ましい生活を描いている。作品の中で、生き物たちは妙な状況に置かれ、やや苦労している風に見え、それらは私達が知っている状況であったりする。作品の多くには社会問題などの要素も含まれるが、市川の作品において特徴的なのは、それらを糾弾をもって提示していないことだ。苦労する彼らを見つめる時、私達は価値観も言語も感覚も異なるその存在の視点にただ寄り添い、生まれた感情を諒解し、見守ることしかできない。だが、おそらくそれで良いのだろう。

Artist Comment
While out for a walk, I noticed a pair of butterflies engaged in a courtship dance. For that brief moment, they had tirelessly eaten leaves, dissolved their own bodies, and transformed into such beautiful forms—just to dance. I’m in awe of how they choose their partners through that ritual, in such short lives. But I wonder—once the dance begins, even if they feel uncertain, is there no turning back?
Gallery Commentary
Ichikawa primarily depicts the modest lives of creatures living around humans. In her works, the creatures and animals appear to be in strange and somewhat difficult situations, which are sometimes situations we are familiar with. Many of the works include elements of social problems, but Ichikawa does not present them with condemnation. That is one of the elements that characterize her work. We cannot communicate clearly with the animals and creatures depicted in her works because they have different values, languages, and worlds. When we look at them as they struggle without words, we can only be attuned to their point of view, acknowledge the emotions that have arisen within us, and watch over them. But that is all right.
